The Spokane Conservation District Firewise program
If you’re in Spokane County, the Spokane Conservation District offers a free Firewise home risk assessment. A forester comes out, walks your property for about an hour, and gives you a list of what to address. They also run a cost-share program that covers a large share of qualifying mitigation work, with the homeowner contributing a portion.
The Washington DNR cost-share program
The Washington DNR runs a separate cost-share program that can reimburse a meaningful chunk of approved wildfire-mitigation work for non-federal landowners under 5,000 acres. The Northeast Region covers Spokane County. Program details, rates, and caps change, so the current specifics are worth confirming with DNR directly.
The one catch to know about
With these programs, the work usually has to be approved in writing before it starts. If you start cutting first, you can lose the reimbursement.
