Why limb your pines
A pine with branches all the way down is a direct path for fire to climb. Ground fire catches the low limbs, runs up the trunk, and reaches the crown, and a crown fire is a different, far more dangerous animal. Limbing up removes that path.
There's a general rule of thumb about clearance from the ground, but the right height depends on the tree's size and what's growing under it, which is part of why we look before we cut.
How we do it
We remove the lower branches to an appropriate height, clean up any dead or damaged limbs, and make clean cuts that keep the tree healthy. Then we chip or haul the limbs so you're not left with a brush pile. On a fire mitigation job this is usually paired with clearing the ladder fuels underneath.
